Charlie and the Chocolate Factory

Participants in the Youth Safe Haven Reading Program are helping Charlie work his way through the chocolate factory.

For every five hours of reading (as a group) Charlie moves one step through the factory. For every 25 hours, a new room in the Factory is opened up.

Once all the rooms in the Factory are opened (250 hours) the youth get to celebrate with a party!

Partcipants of the Somersworth Youth Safe Haven/ Police MiniStation are constantly encouraged to read.

Reading is an everyday event for the youth at the SYSH Afterschool Program. Youth are constantly encouraged to read .

If a student has no homework, they can still earn their Safe Haven Dollars for that day if they read for a minimum of 15-20 minutes.

The reading program includes a system of tracking the participants reading as a group.

Participants log how much time they have read on any given day and all their time is totaled at the end of the week.

Library
Library books are kept on a special shelf so the youth know where to look for the newest additions of books to read.

Every week, staff go to the Somersworth Library and check out books that they think the youth will like.

Participants know that there will always be new books coming into our own personal library and they look forward to reading the new books.

Youth can also make requests for books to be checked out of the library.

This keeps our reading program fresh
with new things to read!

Library Trips

On the first Monday of every month, staff and volunteers take youth to the library to pick out books and movies for use in the Safe Haven reading and recrreation program. Youth are being introduced to using the library for their own personnal use as well.

Youth who contribute the most to the reading program (kids who read the most) are given special honor and a certificate proclaiming their accomplishment.
