Morning Cleanup - First
thing every program morning, the youth walk around the Albert
J. Nadeau neighborhood picking up litter and keeping the neighborhood
clean. The youth who participate in the cleanups are rewarded
with a payment of 5 "Safe Haven
Dollars" for each cleanup they participate
in. This payment is totaled for the week and paid to the youth
in the form of a Safe Haven paycheck which can then either
be cashed or deposited into their Safe Haven Bank accounts.
Field Trips - Almost every day the youth were invited to join us on
a fun summer field trip. Many of our days during the summer
are spent swimming and playing at York Beach, Ellacoya and
Pawtuckaway State Parks. Other field trips include the Boston
Museum of Science, Isle of Shoals Steamship cruise and a special
trip to the FunTown/ SplashTown USA!
Cooking Class - Kids Up Front: A Cooking, Nutrition & Fitness Program: Becca Story, from The Manchester Food Bank’s “Operation Frontline”, will be facilitating this program to the children this summer. The classes will be held weekly at the SHA’s Gymnasium which happens to be outfitted with a kitchen. She will bring food for the children to prepare as well as a nutrition curriculum. During down time while food is cooking there will be a fitness portion to the program held right in the gym with the assistance of The Safe Haven Staff. We are hoping that this new program will breath some new life into our annual summer cooking class.
Summer Reading - This
summer the Somersworth Youth Safe Haven is offering an alternative
to the normal Morning Cleanup community service event. Youth
may elect to read for the time normally allotted for Morning
Cleanup. This reading program is in coordination with the
Somersworth School System to help combat the drop in reading
levels during the summer months.
Community Service/ Service Learning - Every summer, aside from the morning cleanups, the youth
are given the opportunity to provide a community service to
the elderly residents of the Somersworth Housing Authority.
This year will be new and interesting in that the SYSH will
be presenting an "Arts & Music Festival" and
will be open to all residents of the Somersworth Housing Authority
as well as other community members by invitation. Youth will
be working on arts and music projects throughout the summer
in preparation. Youth will also be involved in the planning
and coordination of the event under the supervision of our
PlusTime NH Summer Associate AmeriCorps VISTA members.
The Safe Haven Bank began four years ago and was developed
by Safe Haven staff and Bank of NH employees (Pauline Ikowa
& Intern Jason Gibisch). The Bank was created to give
youth "real world" experience in the banking process
and saving money. Youth may decide to open either a savings
or a checking account (complete with checkbook). The bank
is open every Friday morning during the summer program for
youth to cash paychecks or deposit their earnings*.
After the youth save up enough money in their accounts they
begin earning interest on their savings.
*(Youth earn "Safe
Haven Money" during morning cleanup and summer reading
and are paid every Friday morning.)
